Brooklyn Brewery

Left Hand 400 Pound Monkey

Left Hand 400 Pound MonkeyBeer No. 59 – Left Hand 400 Pound Monkey

I’m going to have to grow into this style.

STYLE: English IPA

ABV: 6.7%

LOOK: Cooked orange and nearly translucent. Nice dirty head – not that it lasts – that’s most memorable for cutting the foulness.

NOSE: Garbage night, moldy peaches, nutmeg.

MOUTH: Has it gone bad or is this what it is supposed to taste like? Chalky tapwater, butcher shop, cowboy boots. It’s times like these when I have to walk the fine line between giving an honest assessment and respecting the time and effort some people, and probably more than I can imagine, put into this. Let’s call it a learning experience for all of us. (I’m sure a year from now after I have more and more of these that I’m going to regret this review what I wrote about Brooklyn East India IPA because I’ll have developed a taste for raw meats and dusty shoes.)

Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

Beer No. 36 – Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

Haven’t found a Brooklyn Brewery pint I can really get into, even in my preferred styles. This being outside of those, it’s less likely to break the mold — and doesn’t.

STYLE: English IPA

ABV: 6.9%

LOOK: Fox tail.

NOSE: Teriyaki chicken wings, undercooked steak, leathery, smokey. I guess it’s making me hungry?

MOUTH: Softer than the bold nose suggests, you could even say it’s delicate, floral. Also a little flat, but that’s not the best-by date … that’s the roundness, or lack of it. The best thing it has going for it is a pretty nice weight, encouraged, I think, by the A-1 nose. Maybe it’s just a steakhouse beer and I don’t quite get it. There is, to that end, some sour cream and chive flavor settling on the finish.
